Abstract

Measurement and evaluation proficiency test for assessing University undergraduate students was developed and validated in this study. The study was guided by Five objectives: the difficulty indices of the test items in proficiency test measurement and evaluation proficiency test (PTMEAT); the discrimination indices of the PTME items; the distracter indices of the PTME items; to determine the reliable extent of PTME items; estimating the validity of PTME items, guided the study. One hundred (100) undergraduate students of University of Maiduguri were used for the pilot testing and reliability index respectively. A sample of seven hundred (700) undergraduate students were randomly drawn for the study. One hundred (100) items with difficulty indices ranged from 0.30 to 0.70 and discrimination indices of 0.20 to 0.50 were retained. Face and content validation of the instrument was ensured by two experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability estimates were established through test re-test method and gave a coefficient of 0.82. The test was found to be of good quality, valid and highly reliable. The Proficiency test is therefore recommended for use in assessing undergraduate students in measurements and evaluation and similar test items should be developed in all the education courses for University Undergraduates.
